It is shown how to generate both Lax equations and Backlund transformations for non-linear evolution equations using the concept of pseudopotentials associated with the properties of the Riccati equation. Several examples are given: modified Korteweg-de Vries, Harry Dym, Kaup-Kupershmidt and Sawada-Kotera equations.
