Among work-related diseases, musculoskeletal disorders of the upper extremities have obtained increasing attention in recent last decades. Because of their relevance, the Italian Society of Occupational Medicine and Industrial Hygiene has decided to draw up a set of National Guidelines on the subject. This paper discusses their production and contents, including definitions, rationale, physiopathogenesis, occupational physician's contribution to biomechanical overload risk evaluation, medical surveillance of exposed workers. © PI-ME, Pavia 2005.
