Many epidemiological studies have shown that hypercholeslerolemia is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. The aim of this study was to test a prevention program based on the counselling given since 1999 to a group of railway workers affected by hypercholesterolemia. The counselling was provided by the railway company's occupational health physicians. Our findings [blood cholesterol decreasing from 229.8 mg/dl (±5.4) to 207.2 mg/dl (±28.6) in the 187 subjects examined, and from 243.1 mg/dl (±34.4) to 216.8 mg/dl (±37.7), to 194.1 mg/dl (±29.2) in the 38 workers subjected to a third check] would testify to the effectiveness of this intervention, although, due to its many limitations, this study is only partially informative.
