It is shown that the Dym hierarchy of nonlinear evolution equations is invariant under a class of reciprocal Bäcklund transformations. This result is used to construct a generic auto-Bäcklund transformation for the Korteweg-deVries hierarchy in a novel manner. © 1986 IOP Publishing Ltd.
