With his mysterious ascension (miʿrāǧ) up to the highest heaven where he will meet Allah, the Prophet of Islam provides an archetypal image of extraordinary power, destined to solicit the imagination and eagerness to imitate of countless restless spirits from the Middle Ages to the present. Sufi mystics and philosophers, poets and treatise writers from the Arab and Persian worlds in primis have taken up this solicitation, producing often highly refined texts in which they retrace this prophetic experience firsthand. They repeat his "flight of the soul," seeing in it an initiation ad contemplanda mysteria coelestia, in search of that "wondrous vision" which, in the European West, even another restless spirit like Dante would later experience and fix in the immortal pages of the Comedy and the Vita Nuova. Con la sua misteriosa ascensione (miʿrāǧ) sino al cielo più alto dove incontrerà Allah, il Profeta dell’Islam fornisce una immagine archetipica di straordinaria potenza, destinata a sollecitare l’immaginazione e l’ansia di imitazione in innumerevoli spiriti inquieti dal Medioevo sino ad oggi. Mistici sufi e filosofi, poeti e trattatisti del mondo arabo e persiano in primis hanno raccolto questa sollecitazione producendo testi spesso raffinatissimi in cui ripercorrono in prima persona questa esperienza profetica.
