The work of Pietro Galatino Opus de Arcanis Catholicae veritatis is one of the most important keys to understanding Christian interest in the Jewish tradition and especially in the Kabbalah in the 16th century. Published in Ortona a Mare in 1518, the work was widely read, especially after the second edition, which appeared in Basel in 1550 along with Johannes Reuchlin's De arte cabalistica. Few scholars have taken note that the editor of this second edition was Francesco Stancaro, a Mantuan Hebraist, but above all an Italian heretic who in those years, after leaving Italy, moved between Basel and Poland. The aim of this paper is to examine the reasons for Stancaro's decision to reissue Galatino's work and to reconstruct the influence that Galatino's conception of Judaism had on the thinking of Italian heretics and, in particular, on the use and interpretation of Jewish sources.
