Nuclear spin relaxation measurements provide insight into the surface dynamics of adsorbed liquids within optically opaque mesoporous media, such as heterogeneous catalysts. The authors illustrate that the ratio of relaxation time constants T1/T2 – obtained for a range of short-chain primary alcohols and cyclohexane in saturated mesoporous silica – provides quantitative information on molecular surface affinity and is comparable to the results of DFT adsorption energy (Eads) calculations.
