INIBQDUCUQN. : Interferon a can provoke autoimmune reactions. We studied autoimmune reactions during Interferon β lb treatment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 18 F, 12 M, aged 2349; mean follow-up 9.4 mo.(range 3-12; in 21 longer than 9 mo.). The following were tested prior to treatment and every 3 mo. thereafter: ANA, anti-DNA, ENA, anticardiolipin (ACA), anti-thyreoglobulin, anti-thyroid peroxysomes; GOT and GPT as indicators of hepatitis, CK for myositis (followed by appropriate diagnostic tests if significantly abnormal). RESULTS : 5 pts had anti-thyroid antibodies before treatment, 2 developed low titer Ab, all remain euthyroid. One pt had ACA, 1 ANA, 1 transient SS-A seropositivity, 1 mild elevation of GOT and GPT before treatment, without significant modifications during follow-up; 1 developed low titer ACA. CONCLUSION: Our results do not show a significant increase in the risk of developing autoimmune reactions on the short term, although a longer period of observation on a greater number of pts is needed to draw definite conclusions.
