Abstract

Neighbourhoods in transition. Experiences in the city of Bologna and the Barca district. The process of transition towards more sustainable urban and social models, while affecting all scales of spatial planning, primarily involves cities. With an overall view that considers neighbourhoods to be the main areas in which relational and functional factors are integrated, experiments are carried out to implement effective strategies for sustainable transition. The CEP- INA Casa “Barca” neighbourhood in Bologna offers offers interesting reasons for deepening. It was built in the period 1957-1962 with design coordination by Giuseppe Vaccaro, as part of the “Coordinamento di Edilizia Popolare” (Coordination of Popular Housing) project and was located in what was then an agricultural area in the south-west of the city. The central part of the district is characterised by the “Train”, a building more than 500 metres long with a slightly curvilinear layout, on three levels crossing the district and defining relationships and hierarchies.
