The pretreatment of tobacco leaves with bacterial pr-LPS complexes induces after 48 h a tolerance state towards Pseudomonas syringae pv. aptata and prevents the hypersensitive confluent necrosis. TLC and HPLC were used to detect in the tobacco mesophyll induction of antimicrobial compounds (i.e. sesquiterpenoids or isoflavonoids) by pr-LPS treatment. One inhibition zone was detected by TLC bioassay with Cladosporium cucumerinum in the chloroform-soluble fraction of the tissue injected 48 h earlier with pr-LPS complexes. The nature and the role of this material has been discussed.
