The figures about the constant increase of in-work poverty, even in pre-pandemic times, testify the difficulty of the Italian wage-setting mechanisms in guaranteeing, not only a wage which is sufficient with respect to social standards, but also, consequently, a remuneration which is adequate to the professionality (quality) intrinsic to the work. This contribution aims at highlight how a decisive and generalized support to the safeguard of fair wages with respect to the professionalism of workers could derive from a legislation on minimum wages.

Abstract

The figures about the constant increase of in-work poverty, even in pre-pandemic times, testify the difficulty of the Italian wage-setting mechanisms in guaranteeing, not only a wage which is sufficient with respect to social standards, but also, consequently, a remuneration which is adequate to the professionality (quality) intrinsic to the work. This contribution aims at highlight how a decisive and generalized support to the safeguard of fair wages with respect to the professionalism of workers could derive from a legislation on minimum wages.
