The authors attempt to summarize what is known about population trends in the various states into which Italy was divided in the period before unification in the late nineteenth century, and in the period immediately following unification. Data are primarily from the official records of the various states and local authorities concerned. The authors conclude with a review of what is known about the demography of the period, and what remains to be revealed.
