1923: un percorso di transizione verso la neutralizzazione della stampa

The relationship between fascism and italian press has been the subject of numerous studies, but a re-reading of the sources, linked to a year of transition such as 1923, offers further reflections on the conception of the role of the press, on the forms of control and on the perception of the change experienced by the witnesses of the time. In 1923 the fascist government aimed to chronicize the weakness of the opposing press by having the lever of state command. In 1923, the ruling Fascism laid the foundations of control over the press with a different intensity of force: in an repressive form towards the Communists, with stifling control over the socialists and with a progressive practice of intimidation against other currents of opinion. In 1923 the public opinion is not yet firmly attracted and welded towards fascism, but the uncertain legality and the role of prefects and squads make up for the lack of trust closing all space. Despite the significant increase in sales of anti-fascist newspapers in the second half of 1924, it is no longer possible to reverse the inertia of the authoritarian path that can afford to increase the restrictive measures even in the face of a further loss of consensus.

Il rapporto tra fascismo e stampa è stato oggetto di numerosi studi, tuttavia una rilettura delle fonti, legata a un anno di transizione come il 1923, offre ulteriori riflessioni sulla concezione del ruolo della stampa, sulle forme di controllo e sulla percezione del cambiamento vissuta dai testimoni del tempo. Nel 1923 il governo fascista punta a cronicizzare la debolezza della stampa avversa disponendo della leva del comando statale. Nel 1923 il fascismo al governo getta le fondamenta del controllo sulla stampa graduando l’intensità di forza del suo intervento: in forma apertamente repressiva verso i comunisti, con soffocante controllo verso i socialisti e con una progressiva pratica intimidatoria verso le altre correnti di opinione. Nel 1923 l’opinione pubblica non è ancora stabilmente attratta e saldata verso il fascismo, ma la legalità incerta e il ruolo dei prefetti e degli squadristi sopperiscono al deficit di fiducia chiudendo ogni spazio. Nonostante il notevole aumento delle vendite dei quotidiani antifascisti nella seconda metà del 1924, non è più possibile invertire l’inerzia del percorso autoritario che può permettersi di incrementare le misure restrittive anche dinanzi a un’ulteriore perdita di consenso.
