Life assessment and failure rate evaluation for cable insulation subjected to harmonic-distorted supply voltage is dealt with in the paper. A life model is derived on the basis of tests performed on specimens of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), which is able to describe failure time of insulation when harmonics affect the supply voltage, modifying its peak, rms value and shape. The effect of voltage distortion on insulation life is investigated varying harmonic amplitude, phase and order. It is shown that in most cases failure rate can be significantly raised even with quite small voltage distortion, especially with high frequency harmonics. The results allow the distortion limits established by IEEE 519 to be discussed.

Abstract
The results allow the distortion limits established by IEEE 519 to be discussed.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
