Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is a retrovirus that causes a significant disease in cats. FIV has been isolated from cats through the world. The virus is spread primarily through cat bites, and treatment is at present limited. This paper reports a general description of the disease as well as a serological survey of FIV infection. One hundred and eighty-one feline serum samples from cats with different pathologic conditions in Bologna (Italy) were tested for antibodies to FIV and for antigen of Feline Leukemia Virus with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The prevalence of FIV infection in this population was 15.46%. Among the male cats the seropositive proportion (21.31%) was greater than among the female ones (3.7%). The peak of FIV infection appeared in cats between 6 and 10 years old. The most frequent clinical signs were stomatitis and gastroenteric disorders (42.85%).
