The authors describe the common alterations of the cardiac blood flow and how they can be detected using colour-coded Doppler echocardiography. Examples of the echo-Doppler abnormalities associated with congenital cardiac shunts and the main acquired valvular insufficiencies are included. Furthermore, the prevalence of cardiac blood flow disturbances observed in 95 horses, submitted for echocardiographic examination during the period 1992-99, is presented. Cardiovascular shunts (i.e. ventricular septal defect and aorto-cardiac fistula) were observed in 3 cases (7.5%). Isolated or combined valvular insufficiencies were noted in 37 cases (92.5%): aortic and mitral regurgitation (17 cases respectively) were more prevalent than tricuspid regurgitation (14 cases).

Abstract
Isolated or combined valvular insufficiencies were noted in 37 cases (92.5%): aortic and mitral regurgitation (17 cases respectively) were more prevalent than tricuspid regurgitation (14 cases).I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
