The project for a new science and technology hub on the Expo area began by adopting certain existing geometrical and structural aspects (the axes, the grid, the water supply and infrastructure networks) and the general urban condition of the area, which is completely isolated from a urban landscape that seems confused and undifferentiated. Starting from this condition of “isolation”, the guiding thread to develop the entire project is the “inhabited bridge” designed as a real “urban street” along cardo and decumano structure. It is organized around two main poles: one on the west entrance, near the “inhabited bridge” that connects the project area with the Milan Trade Fair; and the great open square situated at the intersection of cardo and decumano. Here converge users arriving from the “inhabited bridge” that forms a link with the urbanized Baranzate area to the north, and from another one connected to the Cascina Merlata district to the south. Within these two poles, in an ordered sequence of in-line buildings with open courtyards, including the extant Cascina Triulza, lie the various buildings of the science and technology hub, served by a sort of “horizontal elevator” that runs along the course of the decumano.
L’area Expo è un’“isola” nella metropoli milanese: strade di grande dimensione, ferrovie, conurbazioni periferiche più o meno recenti che la circondano, ne determinano l’isolamento. I pochi segni del paesaggio agricolo che ancora insistevano su quest’area sono stati cancellati dal progetto per l’Esposizione universale, che ha deciso per un atto di rifondazione, per quanto i rapporti con il paesaggio agrario che caratterizzava questi luoghi fosse irrimediabilmente perduto da tempo. La cascina è uno splendido frammento da valorizzare e ci ricorda quanto sia cambiato il paesaggio. Il progetto accetta questa condizione di “isola” e il fatto che la città fondata dall’Expo costituisca, nella sua stratificazione funzionale (la costosa rete infrastrutturale) e nella sua specificità formale (gli assi e la griglia), una condizione oramai ineludibile per il progetto che verrà.
