A city is a complex entity and the evaluation of its colour-scape is based not only on the colour of the building facades, but also on the accumulation of past activities. This study explores the colours of Tokyo proposing two approaches. The first extracts the colours from aerial photographs, investigating what the characteristic colour of the Tokyo landscape is and how it is composed. The second analyses the changes from a chronological point of view of the colours and materials used in the case study: Hillside Terrace designed by F. Maki. Both macroscopic perspective and chronological microscopic viewpoints are effective to grasp the colour image of the city.

Abstract

A city is a complex entity and the evaluation of its colour-scape is based not only on the colour of the building facades, but also on the accumulation of past activities. This study explores the colours of Tokyo proposing two approaches. The first extracts the colours from aerial photographs, investigating what the characteristic colour of the Tokyo landscape is and how it is composed. The second analyses the changes from a chronological point of view of the colours and materials used in the case study: Hillside Terrace designed by F. Maki. Both macroscopic perspective and chronological microscopic viewpoints are effective to grasp the colour image of the city.
