This essay analyzes the Life of Hilary of Galeata, probably written at the beginning of the 8thcentury. Saint Hilary, a hermit since his youth, founded a monastic community in Valley of the Bidente, near a Late antique villa whose history was connected with Theodoric. The analysis aims at a reconstruction of the history of the abbey and the valley with attention both to the political and social context of the Hexarcate, and to the specific characteristics of the mountain community of the Apennines. In fact, the area of Galeata had a strict cultural relationship with Ravenna (hometown of the family of Olibrius), as well as with the Tuscan side of the Apennines (especially the Casentino valley, due to roads well frequented by armies and peregrines). In the 15thcentury this area attained the rank of nullius, gaining its autonomy from the diocese of Forlimpopoli. Also, Hilary himself was from Tuscia, and in Tuscia, where his cult was diffused, his name changed from Ylarius to Hellerus. The abbey held jurisdiction over some hospitals for peregrines in the Appenines (since the end of the 8thcentury), and over many castles (since the 9th), but only in 1498 it became part of the Camaldolese congregation, while many other monastic communities of the same valley had been absorbed already in the 11th-12th

Ellero di Galeata e l’Appennino forlivese tra tardoantico e Medioevo II saggio analizza la Vita (redatta probabilmente all’inizio dell’VIII secolo) di sant’Ellero di Galeata, che dopo un’iniziale esperienza eremitica fondò una comunità monastica in prossimità di una villa tardoantica riconducibile alla figura di Teoderico. Le vicende dell’abbazia e della valle del Bidente vengono ricostruite in relazione al contesto sociale e politico dell’esarcato e ai caratteri peculiari delle società appenniniche. Il territorio di Galeata, che si rese autonomo rispetto alla diocesi di Forlimpopoli, divenendo nel XV secolo un nullius, era caratterizzato da significativi contatti culturali non solo con la città di Ravenna (dalla quale proveniva la famiglia di Olibrio), ma anche con il versante toscano dell’Appennino, e in particolare con il Casentino, al quale la valle del Bidente era collegata mediante strade percorse da eserciti e da pellegrini. Dalla Tuscia proveniva Ellero, e in quella regione si diffuse il culto del santo, il cui nome originario, Ylarius, divenne qui Hellerus. Alla fine dell’ottavo secolo dall’abbazia dipendevano già diversi ospedali appenninici destinati all’accoglienza dei pellegrini. Dall’XI secolo il monastero acquisì il controllo di numerosi castelli. Solo nel 1438 esso fu inserito nella congregazione camaldolese, della quale facevano già parte, dall’XI-XII secolo, altre comunità monastiche della valle.
