This paper describes and compares beach visitors’ opinions about the defence of beaches from erosion and different kinds of coastal structures, obtained through surveys by questionnaires. Three Italian case-studies are considered: Lido di Dante, Ostia and Pellestrina Island. The main results show that: the great majority of respondents prefers defended beaches to eroded beaches; beach visitors have specific preferences about different defence structures, the most preferred defence structure in Lido di Dante and Pellestrina is composite intervention, while in Ostia the majority prefers pure nourishment. The mean daily value of a beach visit is about € 23/25 for the developed beaches and € 6/8 for the undeveloped beaches.
