In this paper we provide preliminary empirical evidence on the relationship between corporate ownership structures and R&D investments in Western Europe. Using a unique dataset of 908 firms publicly-held in France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom, we analyze whether and how the degree of ownership concentration, the identity of the major shareholders and the characteristics of the national institutional environments influence firm’s propensity to invest in R&D.
