The essay analyzes Dante’s conception of the Church and the Empire and its prophetic self-awareness. Dante, after the political exploitation of the Renaissance and Fascist eras, has been revived by the popes (in particular Paul VI and Pope Francis) as a model of theologian poet capable of speaking of God even to contemporary man and proposing a synthesis between faith and reason. His otherworldly journey can be considered a metaphor for the earthly pilgrimage to the heavenly homeland. But his figure allows us to re-evaluate, beyond some anachronistic elements, also the role of lay intellectuals in the perspective of the reform of Church and society. Dante criticized the powerful and worldly Church of his time and hoped, in the face of the prevalence of cultural interests functional to the protection of ecclesiastical power, a recovery of evangelical ideals and of biblical and patristic culture. His Christian culture proved capable of also incorporating elements of the ancient pre-Christian culture and of other cultures, such as the Arab one. At the same time he dreamed of a restoration of the universal empire to guarantee peace: his utopia seems to find a certain relevance today in relation to the difficult attempts to build a new world order
