With Amyclas (Par. XI, 68). Dante, Lucan, and a Complex Accent   The essay studies the episode of Saint Francis in Canto XI of Dante’s Paradiso, with a special focus on the example of the fisherman Amyclas, prototype of poverty confident in front of Caesar’s power, taken from Lucan’s Pharsalia (v, 515 ff.). Dante’s form is unusual with respect to the Latin position of the accent. The origin of the linguistic peculiarity is explained through the probable reading of other sources besides Lucan, namely the French romance Faits des Romains. Finally, the fourteenth-century use of the word in the commentaries on the Commedia is explored and the meaning of the exemplum in the Paradiso is explained.
