Appunti per la semantica di vicarius (dall'età arcaica alla prima età imperiale)

The article proposes an analysis of the semantic development of vicarius between III B.C. and A.D. II with the aim of linking the earliest technical meanings to later generalizations (beginning with Cicero). While the best-known technical meanings of vicarius ('substitute', first of a servant, and later in an institutional position) documented even in legal literature, are well framed by lexicons, the meaning of vicarius as 'sacrificial substitute' in a magico-religious context has been neglected until now. This meaning, which appears in a 3rd B.C. devotional reported by Marc. Sat. 3,9,9,-13, allows us to reinterpret many of the occurrences of vicarius from the archaic to the imperial age: the magical-religious meaning, in fact, is taken up with remarkable frequency in the milieu of the schools of rhetoric, where vicarius emerges as a specific technicism in the language of declamators to indicate a particular kind of self-sacrifice.

L'articolo propone un'analisi dello sviluppo semantico di vicarius tra III a.C. e II d.C. con lo scopo di collegare le accezioni tecniche più antiche alle successive generalizzazioni (che iniziano con Cicerone). Mentre i significati tecnici più noti di vicarius ('sostituto', prima di un servo, e poi in un incarico istituzionale) documentati anche nella letteratura giuridica, sono ben inquadrati dai lessici, è stata finora trascurata l'accezione di vicarius come 'sostituto sacrificale' in un contesto magico-religioso. Questa accezione, che compare in una devotio del III a.C. riportata da Marc. Sat. 3,9,9,-13, consente di reinterpretare gran parte delle occorrenze di vicarius dall'età arcaica all'età imperiale: l'accezione magico religiosa, infatti, è ripresa con rimarchevole frequenza nell'ambiente delle scuole di retorica, dove vicarius si afferma come tecnicismo specifico del linguaggio dei declamatori per indicare un tipo particolare di autosacrificio.
