This research deliverable presents the findings of a strand of DETECt research that has been carried out on VoD platforms, crime drama and cultural diversity. We looked at minority languages, dubbing and subtitling practices, scripted formats circulation, and broader European media policy issues. The deliverable includes five chapters. The overarching argument is that European crime drama on VoDs has the potential to be a strong component of a shared European culture, but the institutional conditions are not encouraging this process enough, and in some cases are inhibiting it. The industrial and cultural fragmentation that characterised the ‘old’ media systems is being reproduced in the online European audiovisual landscape. However, as we show in the chapters, there are realistic opportunities provided by VoD platforms that industry, governments, and audiences can capitalize on. Increased autonomy of choice (under certain conditions), economies of scale, and collaborations among old and new industrial players can strengthen the diversity of European popular culture.
