EnglishThe senator M. Herennius Rufus, known from his tomstone recovered from ancient Alsium, should come from the municipium of Lavinium, especially in light of his enrollment in the tribe Maecia. According to a current hypothesis, it has been also suggested that the tribe of the settlers of Alsium was the Voltinia. Even if it is difficult to verify the reason why censors enrolled the farmers in this tribe, it is possible to explain the diffusion of the Voltinia to the other Roman settlements (coloniae and fora) and native communities, once these had received citizenship, with the presence of cives Romani formally installed in the area.
