The article at hand aims to study the iconography of mušḫuššu – the Mesopotamian dragon-serpent – in the following regions: Assyria, Babylonia, Susiana and Persia (especially Persepolis) in the first millennium BC. The study is conducted in chronological order and it mainly focuses on the most recent publications and discoveries which have provided new insights into the importance of mušḫuššu in the later stages of its existence. This study examines briefly the function of the creature in question in each context and shows how it was in turn adapted by various cultures and empires especially in the middle of the first millennium BC.
