The urban landscape of Bologna is marked by 38 km of porticoes, built over a thousand years. Still today, they are an interesting example of private property structure for public use. Porticoes started during the twelfth century as a private initiative, in order to obtain more habitable space on the upper floors of the houses. Over centuries, the porticoes assumed specific qualifications, depending on the function of the buildings. Rustic medieval wooden porticoes are still preserved, while the refined Renaissance porticoes were the main vehicle for the penetration of the classical style into the city. After mixed fortunes in their conservation, in 1969 Pierluigi Cervellati made them the cornerstone of a detailed analysis of the conditions of the entire city centre. Today, the nomination of the porticoes of Bologna as a UNESCO World Heritage Site aims to put them into the international limelight, with a hybrid operation between conservation and marketing.
Il paesaggio urbano di Bologna è segnato da 38 km di portici, costruiti nell'arco di mille anni. Ancora oggi costituiscono un interessante esempio di struttura di proprietà privata ad uso pubblico. I portici nacquero nel XII secolo per iniziativa privata, al fine di ottenere maggiore spazio abitabile ai piani superiori delle case. Nel corso dei secoli, i portici hanno assunto specifiche qualificazioni, a seconda della funzione degli edifici. Si conservano ancora rustici portici medievali in legno, mentre i raffinati portici rinascimentali furono il principale veicolo di penetrazione dello stile classico nella città. Dopo alterne fortune nella loro conservazione, Pierluigi Cervellati nel 1969 ne fece il caposaldo di un'analisi dettagliata delle condizioni dell'intero centro cittadino. Oggi, la nomina dei Portici di Bologna a Patrimonio dell'Umanità dell'UNESCO mira a portarli alla ribalta internazionale, con un'operazione ibrida tra conservazione e marketing.
