La prua fittile dalla stipe votiva del tempio di Bes a Bithia

A terracotta bow model of a “round ship” comes from the excavations carried out by Gennaro Pesce in 1955 in the votive deposit adjacent to the so-called Temple of Bes in Bithia (Sardinia). It is one of the few examples of naval modelling from Punic contexts. Since it is a fragmentary find, it’s no easy to establish whether it was originally a whole ship model (possibly a ship shaped votive vessel) or only the bow quarter, with an evident symbolic value. The chronology of the find is placed between the 3rd and the 1st Century BC, in line with that of the other numerous votive finds discovered in the deposit. It reproduces the bow of a transport ship, with full shapes, on which two large apotropaic eyes are engraved, while high relief figurines of animals are applied on the gunwale. Despite of a somewhat rough workmanship, the bow lines are coherent and features of remarkable realism can be recognized, a fact that denotes a good knowledge of the hulls by the craftsman who produced the model.

Dagli scavi condotti da Gennaro Pesce nel 1955 nella stipe votiva adiacente al cosiddetto Tempio di Bes a Bithia proviene la prua di un modellino fittile di imbarcazione, che rappresenta uno dei pochi esempi di modellistica navale rinvenuti in contesto punico. Si tratta di un elemento frammentario, per cui non è facile stabilire se, in origine, si trattasse di un modello intero (eventualmente di un “vaso” naviforme) o del solo quarto di prua, con evidente valore simbolico. La cronologia del reperto si colloca tra il III e il I sec. a.C., in coerenza con quella degli altri numerosi oggetti votivi rinvenuti nella stipe. Riproduce una prua dalle forme piene, riferibile a una “nave tonda”, un’imbarcazione da trasporto, su cui sono incisi due grandi occhi apotropaici, mentre sul capodibanda sono applicate delle figurine di animali in altorilievo. Nel complesso, a dispetto di una fattura un po’ corsiva, le linee della prua risultano coerenti e si riconoscono tratti di notevole verismo, che denotano una buona conoscenza degli scafi da parte di chi ha prodotto il modello.
