Fra eserciti silenti. Rivisitare il duello nel Carme di Ildebrando

The essay examines the function of the duel in the Old Hig German heroic poem Hildebrandslied. After an overview of the literary genre of the poem, the typology of the duel is examined, highlighting that it is not a judicial duel but rather a clash that sets up a liturgy of relationships of mutual loyalty and honour that are represented by the gestures of the two contenders. Finally, the duel itself, which in the text originally reflects the ethical values of the Germanic warrior aristocracy, is read and interpreted in a Christian key, in which the duel is to be rejected as a mirror of the faithful's estrangement from God.

Il saggio esamina la funzione del duello nel poemetto eroico Hildebrandslied. Dopo un inquadramento del genere letterario del componimento, si prende in esame la tipologia del duello mettendo in luce che non si tratta di un duello giudiziario ma piuttosto di uno scontro che pone in essere una liturgia di rapporti di reciproca fedeltà e onore che sono rappresentati dalla gestualità posta in essere dai due contendenti. Infine lo stesso duello, che nel testo rispecchia originariamente i valori etici dell'aristocrazia guerriera germanica, viene letto e interpretato in chiave cristiana in cui il duello è da rifiutarsi in quanto specchio dell'allontamento del fedele da Dio.
