Promoting outdoor education practices requires adults to carefully analyze the developmental needs of childhood, a constant tension to seek a deep coherence between pedagogical theories and educational practices and the willingness to put its professional habits into play in order to return to children the centrality in the learning processes. The starting point can be the value of play in the environment, its peculiarities and the role it plays in relation to the promotion of knowledge and competencies. This contribution explores the theme of outdoor play in natural contexts and its function within professional development path. The potential that the subject can have in early childhood education and care innovation and in supporting the professional development of adults will be investigated, basing on the analysis of the available scientific literature.
