In the last twenty years criticism has seen several changes, redefining operational contexts and tools that affected those who have dealt with dance at a journalistic, academic and curatorial level. The present essay analyzes and catalogs the different approaches of the so called dance writing, trying to prove that criticism is not made only of writing. After narrating some foundational experiences, some models still operating today are explored: the academic and curatorial slant, the “intermittent” editorial projects in festivals and on the web, the dramaturgy of dance, some experimental critical grounds, the pedagogical approaches. Towards the identification of a criticism which can “translate and transport”, beside the artists and inventing new contexts and readers.
