The essay examines Francesco Arcangeli’s critical reflections on two significant international artists, Sebastian Matta and Graham Sutherland. Between the end of the Fifties and the beginning of the Sixties many young Italian artists looked to these two major figures searching for new figurative solutions and to overcome the materialbound nature of Informal art. The theorising of «free modern realism» by Arcangeli was a critical response to these developments that were increasingly seeking to create a dialogue with mass visual culture. In the critical perspective proposed by Arcangeli, Matta and Sutherland thus became ideal examples of artists pursuing an image that offered an alternative to the serial and stereotyped images of Pop Art, reaffirming the fundamental values of the organic dimension.

Abstract
The essay examines Francesco Arcangeli’s critical reflections on two significant international artists, Sebastian Matta and Graham Sutherland. Between the end of the Fifties and the beginning of the Sixties many young Italian artists looked to these two major figures searching for new figurative solutions and to overcome the materialbound nature of Informal art. The theorising of «free modern realism» by Arcangeli was a critical response to these developments that were increasingly seeking to create a dialogue with mass visual culture. In the critical perspective proposed by Arcangeli, Matta and Sutherland thus became ideal examples of artists pursuing an image that offered an alternative to the serial and stereotyped images of Pop Art, reaffirming the fundamental values of the organic dimension.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
