We investigate the possibility of using the outdoor lighting system to provide a low-cost, pervasive wide area wireless system. We use the outdoor lighting system as the infrastructure for a wireless access, putting a node on each lamp which is connected by high data rate power line communication (PLC) to the backbone network, and is wirelessly accessible by users in the proximity of the lamp. We define the basic architecture of the system, presenting some preliminary results on PLC channel measurements. We also discuss the potential of properly designed packet erasure correcting codes used at transport or higher layers, to provide additional robustness with respect to packet losses due to bursty errors.

Abstract
We investigate the possibility of using the outdoor lighting system to provide a low-cost, pervasive wide area wireless system. We use the outdoor lighting system as the infrastructure for a wireless access, putting a node on each lamp which is connected by high data rate power line communication (PLC) to the backbone network, and is wirelessly accessible by users in the proximity of the lamp. We define the basic architecture of the system, presenting some preliminary results on PLC channel measurements. We also discuss the potential of properly designed packet erasure correcting codes used at transport or higher layers, to provide additional robustness with respect to packet losses due to bursty errors.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
