The superfluid and dissipative dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a periodical optical potential was investigated. The average effective mass of the atoms in the condensate was determined by measuring the effects of periodic potential on the sloshing mode oscillations inside the harmonic trap. The results exhibited onset of dissipation at higher frequencies for decreasing optical potential. The Bose-Einstein condensate propagated without dissipation in a regime of very low atom number.
