La zecca angioina di Lucera, nuove scoperte

The existence of a mint in Lucera during the Angevin period has always been questioned within the Numismatic literature, primarily due to the few specimens preserved to these days (see the latest work of RUOTOLO 2011). This article, based on an attentive archival research, presents an original document, signed by Ferdinand I of Aragon, in which the minter Masius Pomentarius is forgiven for minting coins under the rule of John of Anjou in the Lucera mint. Therefore, it can be deduced that such minting workshop did in fact exist and, even if very few specimens survived, it is probable that it was active during for the most part of the war between the Angevins and the Aragoneses. Furthermore, the article investigates the identity of Masius Pomentarius and his role in this case, analysing different documents in addition to the contemporary coins issued in the city of Lucera.

L’esistenza della zecca angioina di Lucera è stata sempre stata messa in dubbio dalla letteratura numismatica storica (il testo più recente che vi si sofferma è RUOTOLO 2011), soprattutto per via dei pochi esemplari giunti fino a noi. Nel presente articolo, dopo aver compiuto un attento lavoro di ricerca archivistica, `e stato trasposto un documento originale a firma di Ferdinando I d’Aragona nel quale viene perdonato il notaio Masio Pomentario per aver battuto moneta sotto Giovanni d’Angiò nella zecca di Lucera. Da ciò si puo`quindi dedurre che questa officina monetaria sia davvero esistita e che, nonostante ad oggi risultino noti pochissimi esemplari, probabilmente sia stata attiva per buona parte del periodo della guerra fra gli Angioini e gli Aragonesi. Inoltre si cercherà di capire chi fu il notaio Masius Pomentarius e che ruolo avesse avuto nella vicenda, analizzando anche altri documenti, oltre alle monete prodotte in questo periodo nella città di Lucera.
