Ancora sulla tomba di Mavarta. Il contesto archeologico alla luce di una rilettura dei dati

In 1881 six graves were discovered near the Church of S. Ilario d’Enza (Reggio Emilia, Italy). Organised in two rows, the burials were all covered with bricks, except for one, which was instead covered by two inscribed slabs: the stele of the Christian Mavarta and a fragment of an imperial age public inscription. Gaetano Chierici published the news of the discovery of the late Antique cemetery in the following months: the early Christian stele’s importance was great, because of its peculiarity. By re-examining the pages of Chierici’s notebooks and the objects that were part of the grave goods, only partially published and kept in the Museo Gaetano Chierici di Paletnologia, this study sheds light on the ways and timing of what appears to be a late reuse of heterogeneous stone materials that was not pertinent to burial
