Philosophy of language provides a conceptual toolkit that can be used to clarify problems arising in many areas. In this short paper I start from the premise that DSM-5 contains rules for psychiatric diagnosis and examine the proposal that the general definition of mental disorder can be considered an open-texture rule in the sense described by H.L.A. Hart.
