Abstract
This paper argues for the derivation of the Greek name Αἰθίοψ ‘Ethiopian’, Myc. a₃-ti-jo-qo from a compound *h₂eidʰi-h₃okʷ-, with an original meaning 'bright/fiery(-looking)'. The name was only later reinterpreted as 'burnt-faced' when the legendary Αἰθίοπες (connected with a solar myth of Indo-European origin) were identified with real-world populations. The etymologically obscure PN Αἴσωπος 'Aesop' might continue thematic *h₂eidʰi-h₃kʷ-ó-.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
