This paper deals with a research project currently being undertaken at University of Bologna about the musical training of the university students studying to become teachers in the nursery, kindergarten and primary school. The general hypothesis of the project is that "musical knowledge" (Olsson 1997), can be investigated as a social and psychological construction as described by the theory of Social Representations (Moscovici 1981; Mugny-Carugati 1989), as well as social music values (Bourdieu 1983; Baroni 1993) affecting music education and teaching practice. The previous results show significant co-occurrence of words concerning the concepts of 'music', 'musicality', 'musical child', 'music teacher' and 'music education' (Addessi, Carugati & Selleri 2007). This paper will show the results concerning the 'turning points' occurred during the course of Music Education dealing with the conceptions of 'music' and 'musical child'.
