This article analyzes the dynamics of the configuration of an internationalized “development arena” in the city of Kasserine based on support for employment. In particular, it highlights the transformation of this “arena” according to the specific logics of the job opportunities opened up by the actions of associations that emerged after the fall of the Ben Ali regime. The issue of employment is not only addressed through the study of the projects of associations but also through the analysis of the job opportunities offered by these associations. First, based on the analysis of the relational dynamics between associations, the state, and international donors, the article outlines the analytical framework for examining this development arena. Secondly, it shows how Kasserine activists’ strategies of insertion into the job market and their experience of being unemployed shape the local development arena, while diverting the state’s and international actors’ employment policies as well as the objectives of the associative projects.
