The focus of the paper is to underline the crucial role played by children's literature for the understanding of values such as peace. Books offer children a wide knowledge of foreign countries and their traditions and culture. In this way, they can promote a useful comparison among all nations and encourage peace and tolerance. As an example, I have chosen Kokage no ie no kobitotachi (The Secret of the Blue Glass) by Inui Tomiko published in 1959, a long story focused on Little People from England living in Japan with a Japanese family, from early Meiji till the end of World War II.
