The aim of the essay is to examine a peculiar case of «literature of the ruins» (Sebald) in the Italian Twentieth Century. It studies the way in which the image of the Triumph of Death, the famous anonymous 15th century fresco preserved in Palazzo Abatellis (Palermo), re-emerges and is used in two important novels by Sicilian authors: Horcynus Orca by Stefano D’Arrigo and Diceria dell’untore by Gesualdo Bufalino. The essay first highlights the treatment – more explicit in Bufalino, more concealed in D’Arrigo – of the iconographic and mythical memory of the fresco, placed in direct connection with the destruction suffered by Sicily in World War II, then examines as an archetype a volume by Libero De Libero and Enzo Sellerio printed in 1958 for the publisher Flaccovio, a monumental book of art and poetry that may have concretely stimulated the imagination of both novelists
