The essay analyses the evolution of Eritrean music, embracing a broad chronological period: starting from the 1950s, with the birth of Kagnew Station in Asmara. Through this radio station new musical styles were imported, such as rock and roll, soul, swing and rhythm and blues. The 60s were characterized by the birth of many bands, composed of Eritreans and Italians, who combined the traditional rhythms and instruments with musical innovations imported from abroad: among these the Mahber Tiyatr Asmera (MaTA), the Zerai Deres Band, The Imperials. Finally, the essay examines the musical phase that began in the mid-70s throughout the 80s, when the worsening of the war that involved Eritrea and Ethiopia had a deep impact on the character of Eritrean artistic production.
