The arrival of Lucius on the beach of Cencre has already been related to the arrival of Odysseus in Ithaca, but without considering the allegorical interpretation of this episode shared by Apuleius and his audience; in the light of this allegory, Odysseus is the image of the soul that, after a long struggle with the rough waters of the sublunar world, reaches a safe harbor: it is therefore likely that for the novel's audience, the return of Lucius also had a metaphysical allure

L’articolo suggerisce che l’interpretazione medioplatonica dell’Odissea possa costituire una chiave di lettura per il finale delle Metamorfosi. L’arrivo di Lucio sulla spiaggia di Cencre è stato già posto in relazione con l’arrivo di Ulisse a Itaca, ma senza considerare l'interpretazione allegorica di questo episodio condivisa da Apuleio e dal suo pubblico; alla luce di tale allegoria Ulisse è l’immagine dell’anima che, dopo una lunga lotta con le acque agitate del mondo sublunare, raggiunge un porto sicuro: è dunque probabile che per il pubblico del romanzo anche il ritorno di Lucio avesse un’allure metafisica. .
