Abstract

Open spaces’ regeneration can play a key role in the transition towards more sustainable and efficient models, to overcome spatial discontinuity, and redesign existing urban fabric, insert new functions and enhance environmental and cultural quality, while strengthening local identity and communities’ sense of belonging to places. New roles and urban values, growing needs for collective places, different usage profiles and spontaneous initiatives, strenghten the adaptive capacity of sites and the possibility to integrate new technologies and infrastructures. In historical centers, micro-design includes diffuse measures and intervention of urban acupuncture through integrated approaches and the direct involvement of citizens. Actions range between top-down planning approaches and spontaneous initiatives of local communities and their combination creates stimulus for timely and widespread transformation.
