In this essay I will contend that a significant turn has occurred during the Sixties, ending up in the establishment of what I will refer in the article as the «testimonial paradigm»: that is, the set of textual devices that structures a variety of codes and genres in the contemporary aesthetic production. In the first part, I will go through the historical events that triggered the turn: the Eichmann trial, Wiesel’s famous claim on the Holocaust and May 1968. In the second part, I will examine the mechanisms that govern the action of the testimonial paradigm: the narrative situation set by the author, the contract signed with the reader and the pragmatic register that results from the former two.
