Italian historiography has approached migration as an object of study only since 1970s. This article aims to analyse how, since then, numerous scholars have reconstructed Italian migrations abroad, internal migrations and, more recently, migratory phenomena towards Italy. Much more than in other fields of research, the study of mobility has been full of exchanges between historians, sociologists, geographers, anthropologists, in a common effort towards interdisciplinarity which has been particularly important for historiography. In this way, social scientists have acquired methodologies, keywords and themes that have been used in an effort to better understand historical and contemporary migrations. The study of mobility has now definitively entered the Italian academy, but its relevance in the historiography of contemporary societies still appears uncertain.
