The wastewater treatment processes are complex systems and can be influenced in different ways: in particular, detection and diagnosis are the tasks of observing their state and control is the action of piloting their evolution. In this work it is shown how an automatic system capable of performing both tasks can be designed using tools from the Artificial Intelligence field. However, considering the strengths and the weaknesses of each one, the different steps necessary for the process management are identified so that each tool can be used for the most appropriate task. Finally, the requirements are shown for a hybrid system capable of serving different roles by integrating different modules in a homogeneous and transparent way.
