Abstract

The Italian philosopher Remo Bodei (1938-2019) warned us against the only apparent heterogeneity of the "vast range of apparently isolated questions" that converge in his Dominio e sottomissione. Schiavi animali, machine, Intelligenza Artificiale (Dominion and subjection. Slaves, animals, machines, artificial intelligence, Bologna il Mulino, 2019) and, without doubt, are composed within it in a plurality of threads, weaves and twists, according to the model of the "gomena" (hawser) explicitly mentioned in it. The risk of regression of civilization and relapse into the animal condition (§ 2) leads one to question the presumed uniqueness of mankind and the possible continuity with the remaining animal kingdom (§ 3). These considerations are deepened by resorting here to some texts in which Bodei himself has also dealt with the "painful mystery of obedience", the comparison with the different disciplinary perspectives that converge in anthropological analysis and the possible reinclusion of nature in the horizon of a hospitable reason (§ 4). Recalling in this way "another interpretation of the famous chapters "Self-consciousness" and "Lordship/Servitude" in Hegel's Phenomenology of the Spirit, very different from that given by Kojève and Sartre", it also becomes possible to sketch a response that compares Bodei's theoretical legacy with today's pressure to reformulate the relationship with nature and animality in the non-regressive horizon of an eventual liberation or, at least, reintegration (§ 5).
